Yes, apps are fun and interesting. I've got a bunch of "informational" apps (world and USA atlases), GPS, astronomical, and weather-related types. A few good games too. Probably one of my favorites is the "app toolkit" app that has 90 individual sub-apps in it. It's a 320+ MB download and it's 99 cents.

mw, what do you mean by "Apple developers?" Are you identifying Apple employees or just those who provide the Apple Store with apps? As an aside, are you comfortable that all Apple Store apps are malware free?

An apple developer is any one who creates or help creates an app. Also apple devs help with the beta testing of new firmwares before they are released to the general public.

All apps get sent of to apple for approval before being released in the app store so they are all very safe. Occasionally the odd one gets through however...
