Is there a way to turn on notifications for Instagram so that I get one of those numbers on the app when there are new photos posted by someone I'm subscribed to?

It depends.

Look at Settings> notifications> Instagram.

If you can toggle "Badge App icon" on then yes..

Of its not there....well....you'll have to be jailbroken to get badges on the app.

I did that, turned it on, doesn't work. I get notifications when someone likes or comments on one of my photos. Maybe it's not a feature that's available currently. Wonder if it's on the list for them (now Facebook) to add in a future update?

I don't believe it's available now but it is planned for a future update. I read that somewhere but I can't remember where

I think instagram only has notification if someone has made a comment in your photo or liked it.
