Intermittent dead spots

I searched the forum and could not find my answer, hopefully someone can help. I have a iphone 3gs ios 4.3.5 I'm having intermittent dead spots while using the phone, especially when playing games. Sometimes the screen reacts when my finger gets near the screen but not actually touching it. If i put the phone in sleep mode then turn back on it does fine for a while then starts acting up again.. This has been going on for awhile, seems to be getting more frequent, I have updated twice but has made no difference. Is this a software issue or does my digitizer need replacing?

I was having similar problems, though my "dead" spots were usually in the same spots, but they would come and go.

I bought an assembly that included the front frame, glass and digitzer, and it fixed the problem. I was also surprised not to find more information on others having this problem.
