I’m sure this won’t come as news to many of you, but AppleInsider reports today that Apple’s new in-house Maps app in the newly released iOS 6 has not exactly proved to be an instant hit with users. Quite the contrary! As AppleInsider notes, many leading Apple experts in the press have pointed the finger at the new app, including Walt Mossberg at The Wall Street Journal, saying that it is not up to scratch for an Apple product. Other users have complained that Apple’s Maps is not as reliable or useful as the previous iOS Maps app, which was all Google’s work, of course. Some rather comical mistakes have also appeared. The Irish Times points to one particular story where Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, said that he found that a place called Airfield in his constituency in Dundrum, had been incorrectly decorated with a aeroplane icon in the new iOS 6 Maps! And keeping the Celtic connection, in Scotland, NorthScotNews reports that the satellite images for locations including Thurso, Tain, and Nairn are all in black and white only, “back to the dark ages.” Many other examples abound, I’m sure you’ll have your own. Apple has yet to comment. Google said, “We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world,” in a statement to Search Engine Land.

I'm sure Google maps were better. They've been in existence and tweaked for many, many years. Bugs and issues are to be expected from a first iteration of a map and gps program. I know they bought another GPS company to acquire the database and mapping and such, but for people to expect perfection out of it the first go round is just silly. Shoot, TomTom has been around for years and I still have issues with it. :D

I don't know but the turn by turn navigation does a pretty good job and the rerouting (if one were to miss a turn) works better then my Garmin. As far as I am concerned it is a good start for a company that has always relied on someone else to provide the service and only leaves room for improvement.

IMHO anyways.

I tend to agree with this. Whenever Apple gets their hands on something and supports it, it only gets better. Seeing what they've done in the past, I can imagine their Maps will grow by leaps and bounds.

Tend to agree with all. It's such nonsense - iOS6 / new maps has been out for what, 8 or 10 hours? And it's an interactive map of THE ENTIRE EARTH built from the ground up. People are so quick to criticize. It's absurd and ridiculous= Absurdulous?

I like that new word. I may need to borrow that from you.

well I saw my twitter filled with complains and with tutorials how to get the old maps back but I have to say I actually like it, I don't know what all the fuss is about and I have used it on the new ipad with turn by turn and it works nicely here with no problems apart from not being able to change the annoying uk siri voice to the US siri like you can when actually using siri and rather then google maps that had no turn by turn it is now tom tom powered with turn by turn and 3D which is not a big deal for me as I never look at the screen and just listen to the voice so maybe I am the only one here but it gets 5 stars from me :)

I would have to agree with each of you first we don't have turn by turn available in ios6 yet in Australia .....October is estimated release date. Personally I rarely use the map feature on my ageing 3GS with iOS 6 however when every one started jumping up and down I tried it out and it seemed fine to me.. Street view in Google is fine except when things change and are not updated. I have a client whom has a 4s with ios 5 that shows his new home in middle of nowhere so as far as I am concerned that is useless.. As mentioned above you cannot please every one all the time. When looking at the history of the iPhone and owning a totally fully reliable iPhone 3GS for several years from what I can see the new iphone5 is amazing. I am positive given time Apple will produce upgrades that will satisfy those whom are not happy.

It is my understanding that turn by turn voice navigation should work with the new maps. Mine isn't working. I get no turn by turn and no voice. Help!
