Iphone 3G not picking up wi-fi?

Have Iphone 3G. Notice recently that in areas where there is good Wi Fi that it does not detect the signal. I click on 'Settings' and on Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi reads as 'On'. But it does not connect. I have tried this in a number of places with good Wi Fi. Any advice. Everything else in the phone seems to be working properly

Reset the network settings and do a hard reset.
