IPhone 4S factory locked

I just got an IPhone 4S for a gift but I cannot use it because it is factory locked.
Any idea if it is possible to unlock it at home? and how can I know what IOS version is on it?

Go to settings, tap "general" then tap "about" and scroll down to see the ios version.
And I don't know about the jailbreak, I have a factory locked iphone 4 and I don't think I will unlock it.

Factory locked to which carrier? So someone gave you an iPhone 4s as a gift without knowing which carrier you use? Maybe they could exchange it or get a refund. Or you could change carrier.
