There are three versions. You have to know which version she is buying to be able to answer that question. Here is the list of phones with their respective frequencies.

GSM model A1428: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 4 and 17)

CDMA model A1429: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)

GSM model A1429: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5)

how can she find this information out? is it on the box or in the phone in the settings somewhere?
would one of those 3 versions you showed me work in canada?

No clue about which will work in Canada. I live in the US. And the box has the information on it if memory serves.

All gsm models will work in Canada. LTE on the other hand may or may not depending on which bands Rogers and Bell uses. I know Rogers used to support more gsm bands than Bell but that may have changed.
My father-in-laws 4s from HK works just fine on Rogers.
