Nova Mining Corp announced today that the release of the iPhone 5 will have a big effect on lithium supplies, shortening supplies and raising prices worldwide, much the same as the release of the most recent iPad also affected worldwide lithium supplies and prices. The Nova Mining Corp even goes so far as to say that with lithium supplies already depleted, the increased demand caused by the release of Apple’s next iPhone, generally expected to be by the end of September, could “leave some buyers out in the cold.” Lithium is the main ingredient in long-life batteries such as those used in iPhones and iPads and Google’s Nexus 7 tablets, as well as Tesla Motor’s new electric cars. As a means to help increase the availability of lithium worldwide, Nova Mining Corp says that it is working out logistics for using rail transportation between its plant in Mongolia, and Shenzhen, China.

That is why we should start recycling these old lithium batteries. The world is running out of it.
