iphone 5s - connecting to icloud

please assist in resolving this issue:-
after logging on to icloud and verification i get the message "verification failed - there was and error connecting to the apple id server"

Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi, and your cellular connection is working as well.

Then go to Settings - iTunes & App Store, tap your Apple ID and sign out. Sign in again afterwards.

Maybe you'll also have to go to Settings - iCloud. If there's something wrong in the settings there, try signing out there as well, and then sign in again.
