It seems that industry insiders are saying that the issue could be caused by the phone’s memory controller, rather than being a software issue, as previously thought.
According to these sources, the problem lies with the specific internal storage memory of the 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus. The 128 GB version uses triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash, which, aside from being cheaper than other alternatives, can also store much more data than a single-level cell (SLC) or multi-level cell (MLC) solid-state flash, but which is also more volatile and error-prone. This could be why it's only the 128 GB version that is affected by the problem, as it is the only model that uses TLC flash storage memory.
Phone Arena adds that there are many reports of Samsung SSDs with TLC controllers having similar problems to those experienced by 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus owners.
Should the phone’s storage memory be found to be the cause of the glitch, it could mean that Apple will have to replace the entire batch of affected phones.
Currently, if you take your faulty 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus phone to the Apple Store, it will most likely be replaced, and now Apple could be facing doing this on a larger scale.
