iPhone Calendar sync with Outlook

Somehow I must have screwed up syncing. When I upgraded to 5.0, I initially let my iPhone sync with iCloud. I decided later that I would rather have my phone sync to my computer, so I changed my setting to ""sync to this computer" in iTunes. Now the phone will not update my Outlook calendar. However, if I add an event to Outlook and then sync with iTunes, that event will be added to my iPhone calendar. I'm confused. What do I need to do to have syncing done as it has been in the past and forget about iCloud?

Why would you need to sync with outlook?
See, my calendar and to do list is with google and gmail, so why do I need to go through the outlook middleman?
