it has a potential to brick your phone but i did not see "damage" per say.
I would truly ask yourself if you need to jailbreak. i just recently tried it, Successful on the Jailbreak but felt a little betrayed. i didn't expect the awesomeness to cost as much as it will. Half the apps to do all the cool stuff are Paid Apps.
Just a word of, not caution, but information. As for iPhone WiFi Hotspot, Custom SMS Ringtones, Cooler Backgrounds (Animated) well from what i saw, are gonna cost you.
Thanks to all those devs who rocked the Jailbreak and bring us these services, but I guess it wasn't for me.

You can't brick your phone from jailbreaking. There are a small number of cases that require a fair bit of work to get your phone working again if something does go wrong but there is always a way out. There's almost as much chance as that happening anyway without jailbreaking...

Do I use as new and download everything all again or what, what really bothers me is the customized ringtones, can I just copy them onto my external hard disk and later play it through itunes or what?

If you haven't done so already open loader and install cydia. It's the jailbreak equvilant of the app store. Have a browse round see if there is anything you like the look of. A good idea is to do a search for top 5 or 10 cydia apps on google. There's even a thread or two on here if you use our search function.
You can download ringtones from cydia that you can use from the sounds setting in you phone. If you want to create you own it's I bit more complicated. You can either download a ringtone maker from the app store or do what I do and use iTunes on your PC...
