iPhone speaker

Forgive me if I have not got the hang of how and where to ask this.A problem with iphone 5, which none of the users we know have met and Apple Help are a bit stumped by.
Volume on phone use is ok, but when we switch to Speaker the iphone goes mute. Cannot use facetime as we cannot hear incoming speach. Any thoughts please?

Have you accidentally muted sound effects? Check the mute switch. If you can see an orange line, the phone is muted, but this will not affect your ability to make calls. There are 5 separate volumes on the iPhone, all controlled by the same up/down control. The volume for each is controlled while in that mode.
