Iphone will only send pictures to ios5 users

Have a Verizon iPhone 4 updated to ios5.1 and it will no longer send pics to non ios5 users. If I choose a photo and press send it just sends a blank bubble. If I'm in a convo with a non ios5 user the little picture button is faded. Does anyone know what is wrong and what will fix this?

Are you having MMS "on" in the message settings?
