Is Carrier update same as 4.3 update???

I keep getting a message on my iphone saying i need to update my carrier settings? Is this the swame as updating to 4.3 firmware? I know we need to wait foe that and I don't want to get messed up with 4.3 at the moment and not be able to jailbreak. So is this the same? Can I update the carrier settings and not effect my firmware?

Carrier updates are different from firmware updates. Verzion users got a carrier update the other week.

It should only take a few seconds where as firmware updates can take as much as an hour...
