Is there a way to Delete pending messages WITHOUT opening the message icon?

Searched but didn’t get a hit. Subject = deleting messages

NORMAL OPERATION
1) Text message arrives in the iPhone;
2) Number appears above the message icon letting you know one has arrived;
3) Ordinarily, you open the message icon, read, then delete it if you want to;

QUESTION:
1) Is there a way to delete a pending text message(s) WITHOUT opening the message icon?

You have to open the message app in order to delete a message.
