Itunes doesnt recognise back up

Hi everybody
I recently backed up my Iphone 4 using I tunes.
I needed to restore this backup to solve an argument with my girlfriend but when i plugged my iphone in and tried ...i tunes wont recognise the backup.
It will recognise all the other backups but not this one.
I knnow it is in the directory as i have looked.
Is there any good prgram , preferably free, that will allow me to read the sms/text messages in this backup that arent too technical to use ?
Any help would be appreciated

what exactly does iTunes say when you try to restore?

When i try to recover a backup i get a list of dates that i can back the phone to.
The date i want doesnt appear in the window. Ifi go to the bacup location the file is there with the date on it when i backed it up.
I just dont get anoption to restore it to that date.
a friend of mine can view his files and sms messages from a backup file using a program but he has a mac and the program isnt available for a windows based pc.
I ahve tried a few programs but they are rubbish and dont do what they say

if you don't have the desired backup theres no way to retrieve it. theres no such thing as magic with apple devices.

I have the back up on my pc. Its in the backup folder where Itunes keeps them . I just want to know if there is a program that would allow me to read the backup file.

iPhone Backup Extractor for Windows and Mac try using this program. it seems pretty straight forward.
