jailbreak and unlock

hi all ihave a 3gs on 5.1.1 o5.16.05 its already jailbroken but now need to unlock
i have tried a few things but up to now no joy any ideas how to

You have a few options.... install the iPad 6.15.00 Baseband (as f0recast states) and use ultrasn0w for the unlock, request an unlock from the iPhone's original wireless provider, or purchase an IEMI unlock online.

Flashing the iPad Baseband and using UltraSn0w, which is a software unlock that requires that your device be jailbroken. Since your device is a 3GS, and F0recast says that it's unlockable via iPad BB, that means you have the old bootrom 3GS. If you'd like to go with the unlock on iOS 5.1.1, unlock it as is. Or, if you want to upgrade to iOS 6.1, it'll work as well.

Check out the serial number manually. What's the 3rd 4th and 5th digits of the serial number. We're looking for 139 or below

Question:

Not sure if this has been previously answered but why is it that if the devices are capable of doing all these awesome things, why must you jailbreak in order to release them? It's like having a car and not being able to use the power windows or Bluetooth radio. I don't understand the concept of making something for a customer to purchase and then not allow them full functionality.

Because Apple likes to have total control over their devices. Unlike Android devices which are all open-source, you'll need to jailbreak your device to "bypass" the restrictions from Apple. Unlocking is another thing by itself. The only reason why it's important to jailbreak before you can use UltraSn0w is because UltraSn0w takes advantage of a boot exploit, which is accessible when your device is jailbroken

You can use UltraSn0w... Not sure what the other utility was thinking. 101 is below 139, so it's unlockable using UltraSn0w with the iPad Baseband

Just a update after hours and hours of trying everthing and all kinds of errors in snowbreeze redsow itunes even it stuck in loop for hours i finaly got stock 5.1.1 on
then it upgraded with itunes. then i jailbroke it. then come to unlock i had to go bavk to 4.1 change baceband then change baceband agia si i give up at that point and settled for a 6.1 jailbreak
