Jailbreaking Help

Hi, I'm wondering if there's a way to jailbreak/unlock an iPhone 4 so you'll be able to call and text either by using the free apps or with the normal phone functions without paying a carrier for it? My friend's 4th gen iPod broke and I'm going to replace it but I was wondering if I can get them an iPhone that would suffice as an iPod touch until they have the money to pay for a plan and carrier.

Calling and texting could be done with non-jailbroken apps such as Skype. I'm sure there are a number of jailbroken apps that would work as well. There's no legal way however, jailbroken or not, to gain access to cellular phone services without paying for them.
