Japan Display announced that it will begin mass production of OLED panels in 2018, according to a fresh report coming from Reuters. Previous rumors were suggesting the company would thus become the supplier of OLED panels in a future iPhone model.
According to the publication, Japan Display will be part of a joint venture between Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi, entering in direct competition with LG Display and Samsung in the production of the rumored OLED-supported iPhone. Akio Takimoto, chief of Japan Display's research center, said the following:
"We will take advantage of our advanced thin-film transistor technology in developing OLED screens"
OLED displays are better than LCD panels thanks to their lower power draw and much greater picture quality. Previous rumors were saying that Apple will abandon LCDs in 2018, so there are big chances that the iPhone 8 will get an OLED screen.
