When it comes to the Microsoft-Apple rivalry, the marketing decision that seems to suit the most the Redmond company lately is to launch a bunch of anti-iPad or anti-iPhone ads. However, this time, it seem that Microsoft did a poor job. The company had to quickly make some new anti-iPhone ads on Youtube private and unwatchable after receiving terrible feedback. Just have a look at the above videos and youll understand why.
Initially, Microsoft released seven video ads that were apparently making fun of the design process behind Apple's newly released iPhones. At the moment, only two video ads have remained public, probably because somebody was quick enough to download them. The seven video ads were part of a series called "a fly on the wall in Cupertino".
Microsoft didnt keep the videos for more than one day, quickly retracting them mainly because they were off the mark, as a Microsoft spokesperson said. Obviously, as you can see for yourself, the awkward acting, the low-budget production and just the fact that the ads are not funny and serve no purpose are the real reasons. Talking to CNET, the same Microsoft representative said:
The campaign was intended to be a lighthearted poke at our friends from Cupertino. But it was off the mark, and we've decided to pull it down."
Apple also ran a similar campaign against Microsoft, many years ago, when it was trying to lure PC users to switch to Mac. But, as it turns out, back then, Apple did a much better PR job.
