After a nice relaxing trip to Asia, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty came back with some disturbing, yet fascinating news. She now claims that sources informed her of the fact that the next generation iPhone will sport a LTE chipset.
"Apple will also launch iPad 3 in H1 and a slimmer iPhone later this year," she wrote. Did she say slimmer? She did. Apparently she thinks that the touch panel technology will enable Apple to induce anorexia unto the new devices. She also thinks that Apple might be reconsidering new materials for the casings.
This story seems to be corroborated by the fact that Qualcomm has publicly stated that a chipset merging 4G and 3G will definitely be released this year. Because of the smaller manufacturing process, were pretty sure the chipset will eat up a lot less energy, not to mention physical space than your average designs do.
Huberty went on to say that other details are quite fuzzy at this point, but that she thinks the device will be ready for shipment maybe at the end of the second quarter, unless of course, the competition gets tougher. Huberty thinks that the new iPhone will come packed with a Qualcomm quad-mode chip allowing it to run on all 3G and LTE networks. But then carefully added that it is too soon to know for sure.
"What is clear about iPhone 5 is that Apple and its supply chain are positively surprised by the demand for iPhone 4S, which increases confidence in strong sales for iPhone 5 later this year. Overall, the supply chain looks for stronger than market growth for both the iPhone (50%+ y/y vs. market 20-30%) and the iPad (20-40% growth, higher with a lower priced iPad 2)," she added.
