msging apps

I have a family member who is in Australia and instead of facebooking all of the time was wondering if there was a app out there that we could txt msg or something and not cost any money to send msgs back and forth...

both have iphone 5's

Is there a reason why you don't want to use iMessage? It's a free service. Well, it uses data - but it doesn't use you phone plan texting, so it's free that way.

But, since both have iPhone 5s....

When I was in Italy in May I had to send a message to a friend who was in the same city. I guess he wasn't on wifi then (I was) and my iMessage went through as a SMS . Maybe it's the same problem the OP is talking about ?
I wonder what would have happened if I had used Kik or WhatsApp . Any idea ?
