Tech Crunch has a great post today about a new medical app called Skin Scan which is designed to help people identify possibly cancerous moles, as well as to help keep track of skin cancer rates across the globe. The app was funded as a startup by Seedmoney, and was developed in Romania.
According to Tech Crunch, Skin Scan works by taking a picture of a mole on your skin that you might be worried about, and then uses a proprietary algorithm to look at the fractal-like shapes in the skin, before calculating if the shape of the mole indicates it might be developing abnormally.
The team behind the app comprises two dermatology physicians, and two mathematicians who worked on the algorithm, among others. Of course the app would need to be used wisely, and in conjunction with your doctor, but the basic idea seems to be a sound one, and hopefully could even save some lives.
