With a recently uncovered patent, Apple has stepped closer to the stuff we see in SF movies. This week, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has published a filing called Working with 3D objects which describes the generation and use of 3D objects not by touching the screen of a device, but by making 3D gestures.
Imagine you have a touch screen based device like an iPad, lets say. The technology outlined above would permit users of such a device to lift their fingers above the tablet, and still be able to control everything that was going on. The system will be able to detect and track the fingers moving and outlining shapes with the help of capacitive touch sensors and proximity sensors. The patent goes on to specify that the idea behind the invention could be used in CAD programs in order to render 3D shapes out of 2D objects.
Another cool use of the technology might be found in the artistic sector. 3D gestures might be used to change brightness levels, textures or shadows quickly and painlessly, so creative professionals might take a real interest in the patent
Bearing in mind that Apple has often highlighted that the iPad has a vast creative potential, applying the above mentioned technology might contribute to this aspect. Still theres no telling when we are going to be seeing such technology applied to real life products. The patent has been filed back in 2012 and lists as inventors Nicholas V. King and Todd Benjamin.
