9to5 Mac reports on new findings from UBI Research that would appear to indicate that not all iPhone models will initially make the switch to OLED displays when Apple finally starts using them in either 2017 or 2018.
The original report in the Korea Herald said that UBI Research’s president and chief analyst, Lee Choong-hoon, believes that there would be a staggered rollout of OLED screens across iPhone models, with the most expensive models getting the new screens first.
According to the Korea Herald, Choong-hoon has predicted the arrival of an OLED iPhone with a curved screen in 2018, but adds that initially there would be only 30% or 100 million of total iPhone shipments with OLED displays. However, Choong-hoon said that the percentage would increase to 80% by 2020, indicating that Apple would still be making some cheaper iPhones with the older type of LCD screen for several years to come.
This would tie in with other recent rumours that suggested that only the Plus-sized iPhone models would initially be getting the OLED screens, in order to more fully differentiate them from the smaller and less expensive iPhones.
