According to a story on Boy Genius Report today, a report in the China Times is saying that Apple is planning to release a low-cost nano version of the iPhone this year. This rumour is a bit of a recurring old favourite, and here it is, back again, just in time for Spring! According to the latest story, which is sourced from anonymous sources in Apples supply chain, Apple is going to launch a low-cost iPhone later in the year, possibly around the same time as it launches the next full-spec, top-of-the-range iPhone. The thinking behind this move from Apple is apparently because it wants to market an entry-level phone in order to compete with the lower end of the Android market, and it thinks that the $375 iPhone 3GS is still not cheap enough for the purpose. Boy Genius Report says that, as usual, this rumour should be taken with a large grain of salt, with BGR noting that it is more likely that Apple will release a retooled version of a current iPhone model and make that its low-cost handset than actually release a much cheaper-made phone.
