Smartphone cameras are getting better and better. So much, that on their latest poll, Flickr discovered that users prefer the iPhone camera to traditional popular brands like Canon or Nikon. Nevertheless, the smartphone camera comes with host of impairments such as having tiny optics and imaging sensor compared to DSLRs cameras, for example.
However, a new Apple patent recently discovered seems to indicate that the tech giant is actively working to imp
rove the smartphone camera. The patent in question was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in October of last year and is called Image capturing device having continuous image capture. The technology described in the filing aims at improving the photographic process by providing the smartphone with more margin when trying to take a snapshot.
From the patent:
These image capturing devices typically use a preview resolution for capturing a preview image of a scene. Subsequently, a user provides an input to take a photograph. The device switches from preview resolution to full resolution prior to capturing an image. Switching from preview to full resolution causes a time lag, which may lead to user frustration. Also, camera shake during the time when a user presses a button or touches a touchscreen can degrade image quality.
The new system will, however, allow the smartphone to take multiple snapshots and at the same time store the captures in a buffer until the shutter is released by the user taking the photographs. After that, the system will automatically pick out the image with the highest quality using a set of predetermined variables.
