New Patent Shows that Apple is Thinking About Privacy-Enabled Displays

9to5 Mac reports today on another new Apple patent on Patently Apple which reveals that Apple is looking into ways of introducing a privacy mode for its mobile device displays via an invention called “Systems and Methods for Electronically Controlling the Viewing Angle of a Display,” attributed to Apple engineer David Gere. According to the patent, the technology works by emitting light beams in different directions, so that only the person directly in front of the screen can see what’s on it. Patently Apple says that anyone trying to view what was on the iPhone, iPod or iPad from the side would simply see a blank screen. Apple explains in the patent that the privacy mode is toggled on and off by the user touching a specific corner of the screen.

Apparently the patent also suggests that the privacy technology might in future be used in a pico-type projection system or 3D holographic display.
