AppleInsider reports on a survey published by Boingo Wireless, the largest worldwide Wi-Fi provider, which reveals that mobile devices now make up 58.9 % of all devices using Boingo Wireless networks, which are installed in 60 airports in North America and Europe, as well as 400,000 other Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide. And it also turns out that iOS devices make up 83% of that mobile Wi-Fi traffic, according to the survey, although Android has tripled its share since last year, it can still only manage fourth place behind the triumphant trio of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Given the latest numbers, I think its safe to say 2011 is the year Wi-Fi became an essential part of mobile internet connectivity, said Dawn Callahan, the vice president of consumer marketing for Boingo Wireless. Since the launch of the iPhone in June 2007, weve seen a marked growth trend for non-laptop devices, but the exponential growth in iPhones and iPads in the last year pushed mobile devices past laptops, showcasing just how disruptive the trend is.
