According to a new survey from Strategy Analytics, via MacRumors, Apple currently has two of the three best-selling smartphones in the world. Strategy Analytics’ figures show that the iPhone 6s was the best-selling smartphone worldwide in the second quarter of 2016, with an estimated 14.2 million shipments. The iPhone 6 came in second place with an estimated 8.5 million shipments.
Strategy Analytics concluded that the iPhone 6s is “currently the world’s most popular smartphone,” which would seem to indicate that the phone is still number one in the third quarter, just prior to the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus tomorrow.
Apple’s own official figures reported sales of 40.4 million iPhones in the second quarter, which also included the iPhone 6s Plus and older phones.
It’s likely that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus could well take over from the iPhone 6s at the top of the worldwide smartphone sales charts all the way through to the holiday period after Samsung recalled its Galaxy Note7. Analysts have said that the “heartbreaking” decision by Samsung to recall the phones could land Samsung with a massive bill somewhere between $1 billion and $5 billion in revenue.
