The Huffington Post Tech reports today on a new survey from The Luxury Institute that looks into how wealthy smartphone owners like to use their phones. The research concentrated on those smartphone owners who have an annual income of $150,000 or more, and who, according to the figures, are usually older than the average smartphone owner, with a mean age of 52. While a recent survey by Nielsen found that while most smartphone owners who do not fit into the wealthy earnings bracket use their phones primarily to play games and for social networking, The Luxury Institute's survey found that the wealthy users tend to use entertainment apps far less than the average smartphone owner, although they do still use Facebook and play Angry Birds, just not as much. The survey also found that wealthy consumers are slightly more likely than the rest of the population to own a smartphone, and that the wealthy are much more likely to own an iPhone rather than an Android phone in comparison to the averagely-incomed smartphone user as surveyed by Nielsen. According to The Luxury Institutes research, 45% of wealthy smartphone owners have an iPhone, with 35% having an Android phone, whereas Nielsens survey found that Android came out on top with 46%, and the iPhone had 30%. The Luxury Institute also found that while 80% of wealthy customers have downloaded apps, on average they download roughly half as many apps as the average consumer.
The Luxury Institutes study was conducted by marketing firm Plastic Mobile, who surveyed 603 customers with a mean income of $295,000, with a net worth of $2.8 million.
