New York considering Apple Pay for parking ticket fees.JPG

According to a report on MacRumors today, New York City is looking at new ways that drivers will be able to pay their parking tickets, including Apple Pay, PayPal, and Bitcoin.

The original story in MarketWatch said that the city of New York is currently collecting around $600 million in parking ticket revenue per year. The city’s Department of Finance is trying to make it easier for the motorist to quickly pay for their ticket via their phone or other mobile device.

The city’s Department of Finance stipulates that the new payment system should enable users to take photos of their ticket, or scan the ticket to see the details of their parking violation. The city also wants the user interface of any new payment system to allow for quick and easy payments that conform with payment-industry security standards.

Currently, drivers in New York City can pay the charges online, via mail, or at a courthouse, but the system presently in use does not work with mobile devices, and also charges a 2.5% fee for debit and credit card payments.
