HELLO,

I found this forum to be very informative so I decided to join it for some help. I am new to the Iphone scene. Just got an iphone 4 which has Cydia and SAMprefs installed on it (which I was unaware of). When I got the phone I didn't know it was jailbroken. SO my question is HOW do I restore the Iphone 4 back to its factory settings. HOW to I get rid of SAMprefs and Cydia. I googled and got a lot of stories of individuals bricking their Iphones when restoring to factory settings with Cydia. And SAMprefs has its own problems and gets the phones stuck. Can anyone give me a STEP by STEP instructions on how to restore it. (I'm assuming getting rid of SAM first then Cydia). The iphone is for my mom, and she does not require the phone to be jailbroken. I will appreciate it.

Also, I had kijiji'd individuals, and some of them were saying it'll cost me $20-30, but they can't guarantee the restore because of certain "baseband" issues. I have no idea what that means. I think they might be swindling me out of my money, and hopefully its simpler than that and I can do it myself.

Thanks for any guidance/info.

If the iPhone is unlocked and you're in an area where you don't have service or access to the service of the original carrier of the iPhone, removing SAMprefs isn't the best idea, and will make the iPhone 4 an expensive paperweight. If your mother does not have a jailbroken iPhone, download MobileTerminal from Cydia and SBSettings from Cydia. Delete Cydia using MobileTerminal, then hide MobileTerminal using SBSettings and delete the SBSettings icon on the springboard so that it only exists in Settings.app.

But yes, the idea is to try NOT to restore a SAM unlocked device because it does pose a huge brick problem if not done properly.

You don't need Mobile terminals to delete Cydia. Use Cydia to delete Cydia Installer......Sam Prefs may be used to "unlock" the iPhone....by removing Sam Prefs you may be re locking the iPhone to an unwanted network.

What does all this mean?
Really, where do I go for novice jb news. Or jb, I think some one should start a thread. "JB 4 Newbs"

You're welcome

Can anyone help me?
I say in every post that I want to get an iPhone (4, 4s, or if applicable 5), jb/ unlock it so I can use it on my boost plan. I KNOW I'm not the first person to enquire about this, can someone help or point me in he right direction for help?
Which one would best suit,
Steps and methods of unlocking and generally what I should be looking for.

Thanks
Aes

An IMEI unlock will work for all of those devices. IMEI unlocks do not require a jailbreak and are permanent. You get the device, make sure the IMEI is not blocked (device is not reported lost or stolen), purchase an IMEI unlock, restore your device using iTunes, and you're unlocked.

Thanx Willerz2 one more thing, does a bad esn matter if I'm just going to jb it on another carrier anyway?

If the ESN is a bad ESN, you won't be able to use it on another carrier by legit methods.
