I just bought an unlocked iPhone with version 4.0.1 and baseband 1.59.00. and I was wondering whats the best way to update it to ios 5?

Do you have your SHSH blobs for 5.0.1 saved? If not, I would wait until an untethered jailbreak comes out for 5.1. If you can't wait, you can create a custom 5.1 firmware with redsn0w or sn0wbreeze to restore which will preserve your baseband. However, the jailbreak for 5.1 is currently tethered unless you have an old-bootrom 3Gs.

Sorry for the double post. I am new to this so if i jailbreak my iphone i can update it to ios 5.0.1?

You can only update to 5.0.1 if you have the SHSH blobs saved for that firmware.
