Newboy and cannot call from contacts - please tell me how .

G'day

always tried to remember phone numbers and then needed a book -

sat down and worked out how to enter all my numbers into contacts then burnt the book.

now I press the green keypad - then contacts - select my contact and tap the phone number and the screen changes to New Message.

If i start over and go to contacts and scroll to that required and tap the phone number - screen changes to New Message.

Have searched everywhere but can not find out what I am doing wrong and would appreciate your help
