According to a report from Economic Daily News, via MacRumors, Apple could be planning to give the next iPhone a glasses-free 3D display. The Taiwanese website says that Apple wants to create a 3D “hardware and software ecosystem.”
The report adds that it would not be possible to manufacture the “naked eye 3D screen” using the embedded touch technology that has been used in iPhones since the iPhone 5, so instead, Apple would have to turn to touch-screen manufacturer TPK to help make the new glasses-free 3D display.
While this story does seem to come a little out of the blue, as MacRumors says, Economic Daily News does in fact have a reasonably good track record when it comes to breaking Apple stories, although it also has a few misses.
What is true to say is that Apple has been interested in 3D devices for quite some time, applying for a glasses-free 3D stereoscopic display patent more than six years ago, and, following that, another patent for 3D “Hyper Reality” displays. And current iPhones also already use 3D tech, with the parallax features. These features can be turned off, however, for those people who are uncomfortable using them, and hopefully the same would be the case if Apple was indeed to use a glasses-free 3D display in the next iPhone.
