No sound on iPod touch 4

Not sure why there's no sound. The iPod was working fine on iOS 5.1.1 then I updated to iOS 6.0.1 and the sound won't work at all. I have tried a hard reset, restore (setting up as a new device), even downgrading, but it fails every time. There is no damage known to the iPod. Water sensors and dock looks fine.

They didn't do anything. They just recommended a replacement. Apple isn't much help with iPods..

Does the sound work with the earbuds when plugged in? There could be a fault with the headphone socket.
