no text or email alerts when charging

I just got the iphone 4s on Saturday. This is my first iphone. There are times when it is charging that text and email alerts only vibrate. It will ring for phone calls but texts just vibrate. Is there a setting somewhere or is this a bug? I still want it to play the alert even if it is charging.
