MacRumors reports that Nokia is currently working on a new offline maps app to take on Google Maps and Apple Maps. According to the original report in The Wall Street Journal, the app is almost finished, and is due to be released before the end of the year.
Nokia’s Mr. Fernback gave the following explanation for Nokia deciding to release such an app at the present time:
“I’m convinced people are looking for alternatives,” he said. “Google Maps is a good solution for many, their maps work very well, but it has looked the same and done the same for a long time.”
Unlike its competitors, Nokia’s maps app will provide offline access for both navigation and searching. This could be a great solution for those who want to use their iPhone as an in-car sat nav without using up precious data.
MacRumors says that the app will be available as a free download. Nokia did previously have an iOS app (pictured), but pulled it due to compatibility issues with iOS 7.
