Not paying for upgrades in games...

So as most of us know, most games can be upgraded with coins or gems etc with real money. They give you the option of paying real money for game upgrades.

Today at work (I'm a teacher) one of my students showed me an app that if downloaded you can basically buy the upgrades without paying.

Is an app like this legal? Ethical? Can one get I trouble for using such an app?
