Nothing seems to work to with my iphone

Hi all

I have just been given an iphone 3g, it is locked to vodafone and I would like to unlock it so I can use my 02 sim.

I have followed 3 or 4 tutorials, downloaded numerous versions of numerous software and nothing seems to work.

I restored the phone to get rid of all the data, settings, etc. and now it is asking me to activate the phone, which I need a vodafone sim for, I have ordered one as i have found a tutorial that I would like to try if I can't do it any other way, but would still like to get it unlocked before this arrives.

i have tried Spirit but this wont work with the 3.1.3 that is on the phone.

I have tried numerous versions of redsn0w and everytime I do the "hold the on/off button for 3 seconds, then press and hold the home button while still holding the on/off button for 10 seconds, then let go of the on/off button and keep holding the home button for 10 seconds" it tells me that auto detection will not work with the iphone 3g!!!!!

I have been trying this now for two days and I didn't have a lot of hair to start with!!! lol

I have even tried some tutorials on getting the phone activated without the sim or without the vodafone sim and nothing seems to work.

Can anybody out there give me any advice?

All you need to do is specify an IPSW in Redsn0w, everything else you did right.

Thanks for your reply Jmills, I can't seem to specify one once I have done the button holding thing as it just says auto detection isn't available on the 3g, do I need to not do the button press thing and just click on "extras" then "custom IPSW" and enter it in there?

If so where do I find the IPSW that I need? I have found this site, Firmware - The iPhone Wiki but don't know which one I need!!!

On another note, I have tried again this morning and it is now saying in Redsn0w that the phone is in the recovery mode, it also states this in iTunes.

Thanks once again and hopefully you can advise which IPSW I need and if the entry way is as I stated above.

You need to specify before attempting to jailbreak. That's why it's saying "auto detection failed" because it's trying to auto detect the firmware instead of using a specified firmware. Go to extras>select IPSW to specify firmware.
