If Apple hadn’t already decided to ditch the troublesome triple-level cell (TLC) flash memory used in some iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, then news out of Korea about the underperforming of this type of memory in benchmarks would most likely have hastened the decision.
According to Phone Arena, the TLC flash, which has already been causing very well documented crashing issues with certain iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, has been found wanting in tests by KBench.
In KBench’s tests, which pitted the TLC flash memory against the multi-level cell (MLC) flash memory that is used in the majority of Apple’s iPhone models, the TLC flash was found to be lagging behind MLC flash in terms of overall speed and idle usage.
While the substandard TLC flash should not be a problem for any future iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, as Apple is expected to ditch TLC completely in favour of MLC in future batches. However, current iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners who have experienced the crashing issues on their phones should take them back to Apple to be replaced.
