Despite going into settings and checking order by last name, I have contacts where the last name is in bold, and which display by last name, but other names are in bold for both first and last name, and they list by first name. What is the meaning of the bolding, and why is the order in the same list inconsistent [I'm not sure but I may even have seen the same name listed both ways, by first and last name, which seems to me the best approach, given that I may forget the first name or the last names]

If the whole entry (name) is bold, then the contact entry itself is the issue. Odds are you have contacts with only the first name filed in and entries with only the last name filed in but with a complete name in that single field. Split the entries to their proper places.
