Photographer Covers Bahrain Protests with Jailbroken iPhone 3GS and MyWi

TUAW reports today that an AP photojournalist called James Lawler Duggan has been telling them how he has been using his jailbroken iPhone 3GS and MyWi 4.0 tethering software to send photos back from the protests in Bahrain, where several people have died this week as a result of demonstrations against Bahrain’s monarchy.

Duggan told TUAW that he was forced to turn to his jailbroken iPhone to send the pictures that he had taken to the Associated Press wire service in Cairo when Bahrain’s internet connection slowed down so much it became unusable.

“My jailbroken 3GS running MyWi 4.0 proved to be the only way for me to get the images to Cairo, and even still, the resolution had to be dropped significantly to squeeze them through the pipeline,” Duggan explained to TUAW.

If you’re not familiar with MyWi, it can turn any jailbroken iPhone or iPad into a WiFi hotspot, so that you can then use the MyWi’s 3G data service to connect several mobile devices such as laptops to the internet. It costs $19.99 and can be purchased/installed via Cydia.
