Photos from sd card to iphone6

good day to all.
I purchased a lighting Sd card camera reader to transfer photos taken on my nicon camera,works fine with transferring photos from Sd taken with camera.
But when I transfer some photos from my MacBook to the Sd card then go to use the lightning reader to my phone or the iPad it don’t work.
Why has any one come accross this before.
The .lightning card reader is a genuine Apple product.
Help ple

The photos have to be in the format produced by the camera for the iPhone to read and import the photos. Import photos using Apple camera adapters

Many thanks for your reply.
Just went through the procedure and my camera takes photos as jpeg so what your saying when the photos go into the MacBook does it change the photo format?.But if it keeps the photo as a jpeg why is it when I try to transfer jpeg photo from MacBook to a sd card via the Lightning sd card camera reader.
Am I correct in the way I'm thinking. Or does it changes from jpeg to other format in the computer,Even tried with a windows pc.

The supported formats are listed in the link I posted. You could check the EXIF data for the photos on your Mac to see if they’ve been changed.
