Podcast automatically starts downloading!!!

I am a long subscribing user of the podcast app however now after a recent update when I open the app it starts to download previously listened to episodes, WHY?? I'm totally lost at which setting I need to de/activate. I subscribe to several music podcasts and only want automatic downloading of new episodes, which I had set up successfully prior to the update, now it starts downloading previously listened too episodes each time I open the app. When this starts I 'cancel all downloads' , but what setting do I need to activate/ deactivate??? Any help would me much appreciated. Thanks
