AppleInsider reports that police in London, England, have found a rather unsophisticated, but certainly effective, way of getting around an iPhone’s security protection by simply snatching the phone out of the owner’s hands before it looks.
According to the original report from the BBC, a branch of the Metropolitan Police that deals primarily in big fraud and organized crime cases first trailed their suspect, Gabriel Yew, having obtained a warrant to do so. Then, at exactly the right moment, the undercover team snatched the iPhone while Yew was using it and proceeded to arrest him, swiping through various apps on the phone to stop it locking while the arrest was being processed.
“Officers had to seize Yew’s phone from him in the street,” said the operation leader Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Gould. “This evidence was crucial to the prosecution.”
The information that the police managed to obtain from Yew’s phone showed how he carried out his fake credit card scam, and also provided evidence leading to four convictions, as well as contacts for 100 other members of the fraud ring.
