MacStories has a report from a German website, Macerkopf.de, which says that Apple is planning to hold a special media event at its Cupertino headquarters where it will showcase iOS 5, as well as the new MobileMe. According to the German site, invitations to the event will be sent to the press in the second week of April, which could mean that the event will be held before the end of April. Among the rumoured new features in iOS 5 are a new notification system, more cloud-based services (using that huge new data center in North Carolina) and a variety of new location-based services. Its expected that Apple will also soon be announcing, possibly at this event, a complete revamp of MobileMe, which is expected to become a free service with cloud-based backup features for iTunes, Photographs, and possibly other files. As MacStories notes, announcing iOS 5 in April, shortly followed by the beta, would make perfect timing for the anticipated iPhone 5 release in June.
