AppleInsider writes today that US President Obamas administration has today issued a statement addressing the ability of users to unlock their phones and tablets legally. The statement is a reply to a citizen petition that was filed at the White House, called Make Unlocking Cell Phones Legal. The petition was prompted by a ruling from the Library of Congress at the end of last year, which said that cell phone unlocking would not be a legal exemption in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. AppleInsider says that senior advisor to the Chief Technology Officer for Internet Policy, R. David Edelman, said that the White House was in agreement with the 100,000-plus people who signed the petition online, saying Consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones without risking criminal or other penalties. He went on to say that, the same principle should also apply to tablets. Although the verbal support is good news for the petitions supporters, there is no word yet of any changes to the laws based on the administrations support of the petition.[/FONT]
